YMCA of San Joaquin County's June Outreach Events

June has been an incredibly active and rewarding month for the YMCA of San Joaquin County. We've had the privilege of partcipating in a variety of events, engaging with our community, and furthering our mission. Here's a recap of our June outreach events:

FatherFest 2024 - June 8

Our month began with a burst of joy and laughter at FatherFest 2024. Held at the charming Yosemite Street Village in Stockton, this event was a beautiful celebration of fatherhood and family. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., dads and children delighted in games and activities designed to strengthen their bond. Live music filled the air, Rhymosaurs free-styled, and community resources provided valuable support and information. Watching fathers and their kids create memories, from playful competitions to shared moments of fun, reminded us of the impact family connections have on our community's well-being.

Gun Violence Prevention Symposium - June 12

June 12 marked a day of reflection and resolve as the YMCA attended the Gun Violence Prevention Symposium hosted by the Office of Violence Prevention. Held at the Stockton Golf & Country Club, the event featured Ari Freilich - Director of the State Office of Gun Violence Prevention - as the keynote speaker. The symposium, titled "Truth in Trends: Strategies that Work," was a compelling exploration of the progress made in reducing gun violence in Stockton and challenges that remain.

The discussions, especially from the panel of lived experiences, reinforced the importance of our collective efforts to uplift and support our youth. Offering them a future free from violence and filled with opportunity. It was a powerful reminder that ensuring safe, nurturing environments for young people is not just the YMCA's role - but a responsibility we all share.

Stockton Juneteenth Celebration - June 15

The Stockton Juneteenth Celebration on June 15 was a day brimming with culture, history, and community spirit. Hosted by the San Joaquin County Juneteenth Foundation at the vibrant Weber Points Event Center, the event commemorated freedom and celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the African American community. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., families enjoyed live performances, mouthwatering food, engaging vendors, and inspiring poetry. The YMCA's booth was a hub of excitement as we handed out free books and art supplies, promoting our youth's creativity and literacy. One of our dedicated volunteers, Matt Fox, couldn't get enough of the amazing BBQ vendor, The Naked Rib, and left with three bottles of their irresistible sauce! The event was amazing and we were honored to be a part of it!

Worknet Youth Job Fair - June 20

On June 20, the YMCA participated in the Worknet Youth Job Fair, an event that showcased the ambition and enthusiasm of our community's youth. Held at the San Joaquin County WorkNet Office, the fair was bustling with young individuals eager to make a difference. By the end of the day, almost 100 applications were filled out - a clear sign of the YMCA's appeal and the desire of these young people to contribute to our mission. Seeing their determination and excitement was truly inspiring, reaffirming our commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for the youth in out community.

Healthy & Ready to Learn First 5 Graduation - June 22

Our final event of the month, our Healthy 7 Ready to Learn First 5 Graduation on June 22, was an amazing yet bittersweet celebration. This program has been a cornerstone of our efforts to support early childhood development and family well-being, however this graduation will be our last due to funding constraints. Families gathered to celebrate their achievements, enjoying games like "fishing" and treasure hunts in the sandbox. The San Joaquin County Library's Reading Bus joined us, reading enchanting stories to the children and allowing them to pick a book to take home. The heartfelt gratitude from the families and the dedication of our educators was poignant reminders of the impact we've had on the community and the importance for early education programs.
